Healing Through Trust — For Veterans, First Responders & Rescued Primates
The Unplugged Program at Gulf Coast Primate Sanctuary is a structured, purpose-driven experience designed for military veterans and first responders living with PTSD. This program creates a quiet, supportive environment where participants engage in guided trust-building activities with rescued primates who have also experienced instability and trauma.
Most of our monkeys are former exotic pets who were heavily human-bonded and later surrendered when owners could no longer provide appropriate care. Many struggle with anxiety, hyper-vigilance, insecurity, and difficulty forming stable bonds. Like the people we serve, they must relearn what safety and consistency feel like.
The Unplugged Program brings these two healing journeys together.
How It Works
Participants are introduced to:
-
Non-verbal communication awareness
-
Reading behavioral cues and body language
-
Regulating tone, posture, and energy
-
Consistency and routine
-
Patience and emotional control
-
Respecting boundaries and building trust over time
All activities are supervised and conducted in full compliance with USDA licensing standards and the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Interactions are structured to prioritize primate welfare, emotional safety, and species-appropriate care.
Why It Matters
Trust with a previously displaced primate cannot be rushed. It requires:
-
Calm presence
-
Predictable behavior
-
Emotional regulation
-
Respect for boundaries
-
Consistency over time
These same skills are foundational in rebuilding personal relationships, restoring confidence, and regaining stability after trauma.
Participants often report:
-
Increased self-awareness
-
Improved emotional regulation
-
Reduced isolation
-
Renewed confidence
-
A restored sense of purpose
The sanctuary environment removes outside noise and distraction — it is “unplugged” from chaos and focused on meaningful connection and responsibility.
A Shared Path to Healing
Our primates need safety, structure, and steady human interaction within appropriate boundaries. So do many who have served.
The Unplugged Program reflects our broader mission:
When we help traumatized animals regain stability, we create space for people to do the same.
Program Disclaimer
The Unplugged Program is a volunteer-based sanctuary engagement program and is not a clinical therapy service, counseling program, or medical treatment. Gulf Coast Primate Sanctuary does not provide mental health services, psychiatric care, or licensed therapeutic interventions.
Participation is intended to offer structured, purposeful volunteer opportunities within a regulated animal care environment. Individuals seeking treatment for PTSD or other mental health conditions should remain under the care of a licensed medical or mental health professional.
The Unplugged Program is designed to complement — not replace — professional care.
Support the Unplugged Program
The Unplugged Program is offered at no cost to veterans and first responders living with PTSD. We believe that financial barriers should never prevent someone from accessing purpose, structure, and meaningful connection.
If you believe in this mission, we invite you to support it.
Your donation or sponsorship directly helps us:
-
Maintain USDA-compliant primate care standards
-
Provide enrichment, nutrition, and veterinary oversight for our residents
-
Supply materials and operational support for participant involvement
-
Sustain a structured, safe environment for both animals and people
By sponsoring or donating to the Unplugged Program, you are helping us continue this dual commitment — lifelong sanctuary for displaced primates and purposeful engagement opportunities for those rebuilding after trauma.
Together, we can continue assisting both animals and the people who care for them.
